Detour Workshop 2023 - The Mesmerising Mosaic Tiles (2023)

Mosaic tile (紙皮石) is a handy construction material for workers to clothe the exterior walls efficiently without compromising aesthetics. In recent years, it has evolved from a construction material to a cultural symbol of Hong Kong architecture. However, such transformation may overlook some essential parts, particularly the craftsmanship of making mosaic tiles. Beyond the fascinating patterns, the craftsmanship should be well-preserved and sustained to retain a complete story of mosaic tiles. We can also answer modern-day choices and preferences by integrating craftsmanship into art and daily products.

The proposed workshop intends to guide the participants to rediscover the craftsmanship and beauty of mosaic tiles and inspire them to explore the daily application of this material. The participants will experience making mosaic tile plates under the supervision of an experienced mosaic tile sifu (teacher) and take a lovely DIY plate home. When waiting for the necessary drying process, a walking tour around PMQ will offer the participants an opportunity to visit and appreciate the stories and diverse applications of mosaic tiles on the buildings in the neighbourhood.
